Grant Project ИРН AP09260877″Assessment of the prospects of groundwater fountain (self-flowing) exploitation for sustainable development of rural areas of Zhambyl region”,  scientific adviser – Adenova D.K.

Goal of the project

Scientific substantiation and geoinformational support of management decisions on the use of the potential of confined groundwater during fountain (self-flowing) operation for sustainable development of rural areas ofZhambyl region.

Objective of the project

To achieve the goal of the project, it is planned to implement the following tasks:

1) Expeditionary survey and testing of self-flowing hydrogeological wells with an assessment of the sanitary-ecological and technical condition of water points.

2) Analysis and assessment of trends in pressurized and capacity reserves, renewable resources of confined artesian groundwater in Zhambyl region under the influence of climatic factors and anthropogenic loads.

3) Analysis and assessment of the potential for fountain operation of self-flowing artesian groundwater, the state and prospects of their use for sustainable development of rural areas of Zhambyl region

4) Formation of a geoinformation database of self-flowing wells and confined artesian aquifers of the territory of Zhambyl region to assess the potential for fountain exploitation of groundwater for irrigation of lands and watering of pastures.

5) Development and creation of a geo-information and analytical subsystem of self-flowing confined groundwater resources in Zhambyl region for assessing, forecasting and making management decisions on their use and protection.

The need to provide conditions to preservewell-being of the population is laid down in the “Basic Provisions of the General Scheme for the Organization of the Territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.Main directions of development of the country’s regions states for Zhambylregionthat the development of the production of fruits and vegetables, sugar beets, meat and dairy cattle breeding is envisaged as the priorities of the agricultural complex until 2050. The regional administration is implementing a number of practical measures aimed at increasing the volume of irrigated lands and areas of watered pastures. One of the promising areas is the development of self-flowing hydrogeological wells. According to the Geology Committee of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as of 2010 within the region, the productivity of 500 self-flowing wells was up to 3.0 m3/sec.

When developing self-flowing wells, the main method of irrigation is sprinkling, during which water costs are reduced during irrigation, with no discharge, an optimal water regime of the soil is ensured and microclimatic indicators in the environment of plant development are improved.

There is a worldwide positive experience in the development of the artesian pressurized waters potential. In Australia, the Great Artesian Basin Well Rehabilitation Program (1989-1999yy.) was developed and implemented at the federal level to provide a scientific basis for better Basin management and elimination of some unproductive water losses and artesian pressure increase. A significant part of the 1200 uncontrolled and corroded wells with water intake facilities have been rehabilitated. In some regions, significant success has been achieved in increasing the head and flow rate of wells.

The scientific novelty of project research lies in the development and creation of a geoinformation and analytical subsystem of the confined groundwater resources in Zhambyl region for assessing, forecasting and making management decisions on their use and protection during fountain (self-flowing) operation for sustainable development of rural areas.

The results of scientific research will make it possible to assess the tendencies of changes in pressurized and capacitive reserves, renewable resources ofconfined groundwater in Zhambyl region under the influence of climatic factors and anthropogenic loads and to form a geoinformation database of self-flowing wells and confined artesian aquifers of the territory of Zhambyl region.

The significance of the project on a national and international scale lies in the fact that as a result of scientific research, for the first time in domestic practice, approaches and methods will be developed to assess the potential of fountain (self-flowing) exploitation of confined artesian groundwater. At the regional level, predictive scenarios for the management of the use and protection of self-flowing confined artesian groundwater will be recommended, which is of important practical interest for the formation of a water policy for the regional akimat and district akimats, design companies and higher educational institutions.

The research results are relevant for the sustainable development of rural areas in Zhambyl region with the development of irrigated agriculture and the cultivation of fruit and berry and forage crops, as well as further sustainable socio-economic development of the region.

The main results for 2021:

1.The generalization and analysis of factual data, stock and analytical materials on the presence, design and condition of self-flowing hydrogeological wells in the Zhambyl region were carried out;

  1. Expeditionary surveys and testing of self-flowing hydrogeological wells were carried out with an assessment of the sanitary-ecological and technical condition of water points in the Merke, Shui and Kurdai districts of the Zhambyl region;
  2. A geoinformation database of self-flowing wells and pressure artesian aquifers of the territory of the Merke, Shui and Kurdai districts of the Zhambyl region has been developed and formulated;
  3. The potential of fountain exploitation of pressurized underground waters, the state and prospects of their use for sustainable development of rural areas of the Merke, Shui and Kurdai districts of the Zhambyl region have been analyzed and evaluated;
  4. An article was published in the collection of reports of the VI-th Baikal Youth Scientific Conference on Geology and Geophysics.
